Promoting the Southern Broads

Revitalisation and promotion of the Southern Broads

Following discussions at the close of the 2011 AGM a Working Group met in December to plan the way forward for the Southern Rivers Sub-Committee. A new Committee was proposed consisting of David Capp, Don Cleaver, Colin Dye, David Trower, Peter Waller, Mark Wells and myself as Chairman. It was also proposed that the new Sub-committee should focus on ‘The Revitalisation and Promotion of the Southern Broads’. These proposals were approved at the January meeting of the Main Committee.

At their February meeting the SRC agreed that their first step would be to approach the Broads Authority and offer the Society’s help in promoting the Southern Broads, attracting more visitors and improving facilities. Accordingly members of the committee will be visiting Dragonfly House on 27 March for a meeting with Clare Weller, Head of Communications, and Jess Tunstall, producer of the Broadcaster.

Another important result of the SRC February meeting is the inclusion of the Broads Society in the list of recipients of the ‘Notices to Mariners’. This follows the proposed closure of Vauxhall Bridge, raised by Colin Dye. In future the Society will be aware of any impending closures or restrictions to navigation well in advance, thus giving the Society time to respond appropriately.

The committee is also keeping a close watch on the proposed developments at the Pegasus site at Oulton Broad.
